What did Jesus believe?

Jesus did not start a new religion called Christianity. He was a Jewish man raised by Jewish parents and attended a Jewish synagogue. (The word synagogue and church share the same meaning and are used interchangeably in the New Covenant.)

Jesus practiced Judaism. He believed in one God. He lived during a time when Judaism (which is the practice of the Old Covenant writings), had become perverted under Roman rule – the political and religious leaders were cohorts. Just as we have corrupt politicians and religious leaders today, it was no different two thousand years ago.

Jesus spent a great deal of His time correcting the 'wrong doctrine' taught by the Jewish religious leaders who were in league with Rome. People were confused by their interpretations of the Bible, just as people are confused today.

On the surface, it seemed these religious leaders were righteous men — they certainly dressed the part. They were also very knowledgeable about the Law of Moses. However, this did not make them righteous, neither did it make them leaders that should be followed. In fact, Jesus boldly confronted them, which you can read for yourself in the New Covenant, Book of Matthew, Chapter 23.

Jesus called these religious leaders hypocrites, thieves, blind guides and murderers! He did not candy coat the truth. If you were a liar, you were a liar, and Jesus called you on it.

"You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it."

This was the basis of Jesus' ministry — the work He engaged in for three solid years, from age thirty to age thirty-three, until He was executed. Jesus did not hesitate to let the religious leaders know where they were making mistakes in their understanding of the Bible's writings.

"Jesus answered and said unto them, You do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God."

At an early age, Jesus made a decision to invest His time in studying and understanding the Bible (the Old Covenant writings), which formed the basis of all His teachings, referred to as doctrine.

"Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself."

By the time Jesus was thirty years old, He had developed perfect understanding of the Bible, something He told His followers they could also achieve.

In spite of Jesus' perfect understanding of the Bible, most of the men that were in control of the religious system hated Him. (If you believe or teach the truth, don't expect to be popular!) They even accused him of doing His miracles by the power of the devil.

"If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?"

Jesus knew exactly what He believed. There was no confusion in His brain.

"You worship you know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews."

If you approach the Old Covenant writings with the idea that you are seeing into the brain of Jesus, that everything written in the Old Covenant is the basis of what Jesus believed and taught in New Testament times, you will see Jesus in a different light.

If you'd like to get to know the 'real' Jesus, stick around!

What is Doctrine?

The teachings of the Bible are referred to as doctrines. A doctrine is simply a teaching. A doctrine does not need a stamp of approval from any religious leader or institution before you believe it. A doctrine does need to line up with the information contained in the Bible, which means it needs to be understood and taught the way God intended.

"Hear, you children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding. For I give you good doctrine, forsake not my law."

The Bible warns about false doctrine. Jesus warned His followers that someone would try to deceive them after His death. In fact, two thousand years ago there were already many false prophets on the planet teaching false doctrines. You may be surprised to learn that many of these false doctrines made their way into the mainstream and are part of our culture today!

"For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables."

A close look at the first century church and today's Christianity reveals disturbing differences. These differences appear in the form of strange doctrines that Jesus never taught.

Over the years, I have heard many Christians say that doctrine is not important; that it's perfectly fine to have different doctrinal views as long as a person believes Jesus died for their sins. Nothing could be further from the truth!

"Take heed unto yourself, and unto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this you shall both save yourself, and them that hear you."

If you stick around, you'll learn truthful doctrines that will make you strong!

I hope this blog will make you question your preachers and teachers. Just because someone claims to be a Bible expert or God's messenger, doesn't mean it is true. Just because millions of people believe something, doesn't make it true.

Never forget that you are responsible for what you believe. The devil cannot be blamed for ignorance since God made sure the Bible survived so we would have a 'sure way' of knowing what is true.

In the Old Covenant, a man named Jacob wrestled with an angel — a human being, not a feathery creature. Jacob refused to let go of the angel until the angel blessed him. If you approach the Bible this way, you will get to the truth.

The New Covenant

The second section of the Bible is called the New Covenant. This is the part of the Bible that Christians hold sacred and forms the basis of Christianity. It begins with the Book of Matthew and ends with the Book of Revelation.

The first four books of the New Covenant are called the gospels. The word gospel is translated 'good tidings' in most reference books, but it is simply another word for truth.

"For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it."

I can't imagine someone losing his life for speaking good tidings; but I can imagine someone losing his life for speaking the truth. It cost John the Baptist his head!

"For John had said unto Herod, It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife."

The gospels are records of the life of the Jewish Messiah, Jesus. Four different authors give us insight into Jesus' life, but it is only a glimpse. In the gospel of John, we find an interesting statement:

"And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written."

After the four gospels, you'll find the Book of Acts. This is the record of the 'first century church' — comprised of thousands of Jewish believers that believed in the Jewish Messiah. Soon after Jesus' death, the Gentiles (non-Jews) were flocking to the community of Jewish disciples. It is during this time, many years after Jesus' death, that the word 'Christian' appears for the first time.

"And when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pass, that a whole year they assembled themselves with the church, and taught much people. And the disciples were called Christians first in Antioch."

Following the Book of Acts are letters written to various churches (groups of disciples) located in different cities and countries. The first is the Letter to the Romans (the church at Rome), then the Letter to the Corinthians (the church at Corinth, Greece), and many others. These letters address problems within the churches, rules for operating a church and the behavior God expects from Christians, including their leaders.

You will hear the New Testament letters also called epistles. Either one is correct and both words are used interchangeably in the Bible.

The New Covenant ends with the Book of Revelation — the most controversial book of the Bible for Christians, and one that has been subjected to thousands of misinterpretations and failed predictions. However, the Book of Revelation starts out with a statement that tells readers it is indeed possible to understand its cryptic writings.

"Blessed is he that reads, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein: for the time is at hand."

This means it is possible to understand the things written in the Bible so we can do those things and receive a blessing!

How to Approach the Bible

Logically!

When you read the Bible, look for the practical teachings that can impact your life immediately. Don't worry about what you don't understand. You can make notes of your questions, but shelve those things for now until you develop a basic understanding of the Bible's teachings. You are laying a foundation for the deeper teachings!

There is no quick way to learn the Bible. A person learns the Bible one principle (precept) at a time, which is exactly how Jesus learned the Bible.

Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? Them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts. For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little… .

There are basically two types of teachings in the Bible: literal teachings and figurative teachings. The Bible refers to the literal teachings as milk and the figurative teachings as meat.

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that you may grow thereby.

But strong meat belongs to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

The simple teachings of the Bible (milk) let us know what behavior God expects from us. Reading one of the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke or John) or the Book of Romans is a good place to start. The gospels will introduce you to the Jewish Messiah, whom Christians call Jesus.

The more difficult teachings of the Bible (meat) enable us to grow in our understanding of the Bible's concepts, which is the process of being born-again. Being spiritually re-born does not mean a person stays a baby! In fact, the Bible refers to four stages of spiritual growth, but most Christians are stuck in stage one, which is the baby stage.

The deeper teachings of the Bible include hundreds of mysteries that can only be unraveled with the help of the Holy Spirit, who is the "revealer" of God's Word.

Jesus answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.

Always remember that it is our actions that prove whether or not we believe in God. If we believe what God has written in the Bible, then we will follow His instructions, called commandments. These instructions are designed to help us change, which is the meaning of the word repentance.

Changing your behavior begins with changing your thinking, and making a decision to do things God's way. Once you make this decision, whatever you do, never give up. No matter how many times you fail in your efforts, keep trying and never make excuses for your bad behavior.

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which does so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us.

I attended a book fair several years ago where the poet Maya Angelou was one of the speakers. Someone in the audience asked her if she was a Christian. Maya Angelou responded, "I'm trying to be a Christian." That was one of the most honest answers I've ever heard.

The Bible on Religion »

Jesus and the Prophecies

A prophecy is a prediction. The entire Bible is really a book of prophecy. It can be said that the strength of the Bible is its ability to foretell the future. You don't need a crystal ball — you only need the Bible!

If you study the Bible's predictions, you will discover that the Bible foretold historical events hundreds or thousands of years before they took place.

If you would like to know what's coming in the future, don't waste your money on psychics or fortune tellers. Start digging for the truth in the Bible and you will see what's coming.

One of the biggest problems with Christianity today is all the different interpretations of the prophecies, especially the Book of Revelation.

I spent twenty years in different churches listening to different versions of the prophecies. One day, God sent a Jewish man to me — a man that was born in Israel, understood the history of the Jewish people, and had spent fifty years of his life studying the prophecies. He began teaching me the Bible in a whole new light. He never gave me his interpretation of the Bible — he only pointed me to passages in the Bible that answered my questions.

"We know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews."

Beware of anyone that gives you their interpretation of the Bible. One of the miracles of the Bible is its ability to interpret itself. It's simply a matter of connecting the dots, meaning all the pieces of information on any given subject. Sure this takes time, but it is the only way to understand the Bible. A good teacher will help you shorten the time you would have to search for this information on your own.

One of the Bible's most important predictions concerned the Messiah (messiah means anointed one). God 'anointed' Jesus to do a very special job on earth: to die for the sin of the world. Can you imagine reading this statement in your job description?

Jesus taught us that everything written in the Old Covenant was foretelling the coming of the Messiah and the 'work' the Messiah would do.

"Search the scriptures; for in them you think you have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me."

When you apply for a job, you are given a job description. If you are hired, you are expected to fulfill all the requirements of that job. It was no different for Jesus. He made a decision to accept the position of 'Messiah' and followed the job description perfectly.

"And Jesus said unto them, How is it that you sought me? know you not that I must be about my Father's business?"

"I have glorified you on the earth: I have finished the work which you gave me to do."

The Old Covenant provided the entire framework for Jesus' life and the work that He would do for God. God 'communicated' to Jesus through the prophecies, which Jesus continued to teach his disciples after he was resurrected from the dead.

"Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself."

If you have ears, hear.

The Bible on Religion

The word 'religion' never appears in the Old Covenant. There is simply one God who gave life to all creation. He is called the Father and the Creator.

In the Old Covenant, the Hebrew word used for God means true God. It also means God is everywhere at all times, which is what the New Covenant word omnipotent means.

"And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigns."

This one God is the 'engine' behind all life, meaning nothing can exist unless He allows it to exist.

I love how one New Covenant writer describes God. I have never found anything better.

"God that made the world and all things in it, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwells not in temples made with hands; neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he gives to all life, and breath, and all things … for in him we live, and move, and have our being."

The belief in one God is what made the Jewish people different from other ancient peoples, who believed in many gods.

In academic circles, the belief in one God is referred to as monotheism. The belief in many gods is referred to as polytheism.

In the New Covenant, the word 'religion' appears five times. It means to worship God. Jesus spent His life teaching people how to worship God.

"The hour comes, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."

This means you must get your spirit involved! If your spirit is sleeping or polluted by lies, then you have to 'fix' your spirit before you can worship God. The way you fix your spirit is by learning the truth, which is why God gave us the Bible.

"The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life."

You can go to church your whole life and yet your spirit can be dead because the church you are attending is not feeding you the truth. Any lies about God, Jesus or the Bible (whether intentional or unintentional) will cause a person's spirit to become sick. The condition of your spirit affects your physical body and your level of happiness.

"I am against them that prophesy false dreams, says the LORD, and do tell them, and cause my people to err by their lies, and by their lightness; yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profit this people at all, says the LORD."

The Bible's definition of 'religion' is beautiful. It has nothing to do with a fancy building or performing special ceremonies throughout the year. It has to do with a lifestyle, meaning the way we live our lives and how we treat others.

"Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."

"If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridles not his tongue, but deceives his own heart, this man's religion is vain."

If you want to learn more about pure religion, stick around!

The Love of Money

Money itself is not evil. It is the love of money that is evil.

"For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows."

Think of a root. A root is the basis of a tree or plant. The root determines the type of leaf or fruit the plant will bear.

The Bible teaches us that every human being, family and nation has a root. This root is not based on blood relationships, but rather, a mentality.

If the root (mentality) is good, meaning it is God-based, then good fruit will be produced.

If the root (mentality) is evil, meaning it is money-based, then evil fruit will be produced.

One day, Jesus was teaching about false prophets and the people that follow them. The 'root' is the teachings of these false prophets. The 'fruit' is the people that follow them.

"You shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree brings forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree brings forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that brings not forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits you shall know them."

For parents, their children are their fruit.

For leaders of nations, their citizens are their fruit.

For pastors, their congregations are their fruit.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to determine the root of a family, nation or church. One only needs to look at the fruit!

As an individual, your fruit also refers to your behavior. Your mentality is dictating your actions and creating results, whether good or bad.

Most people don't believe they love money. I have an easy 'test' for you.

What do you think about the most?

If money is constantly in your brain and the pursuit of it is the basis of your life, you're in love with it!

If you're afraid to lose the money you have, beware. Fear is an indicator that you are trusting in money and not God.

"Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy."

Many people believe that more money will solve their problems and make their lives better. There are thousands of get-rich-quick schemes and wealth-building books that prey on this belief. Watch out for these traps.

"But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition."

You will find many rich men in the Bible. Some of these men were Godly and some were evil. The big question becomes: how did they achieve their wealth?

Stick around for the answer!

Bible passages to study:

1 Timothy 6:10, Matthew 7:16-20, 1 Timothy 6:17, 1 Timothy 6:9

You are the Temple of God

I don't know why people think God can be found inside a building!

"God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwells not in temples made with hands." ~Acts 17:24

If you don't find God within yourself, forget finding Him inside a church.

"Don't you know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?" ~1 Corinthians 3:16

God created your physical body as a 'house' that He could live in. Wherever you are, wherever you go, you take God with you. You are really a portable sanctuary! However, the Bible teaches us that 'sin' creates a separation between a person and God. (I will cover sin in another post.)

"Your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear." ~Isaiah 59:2

The 'separation' that occurs between a person and God does not mean that God leaves that person's body. If God left your body, you would die. As I mentioned in another post, God is the 'engine' behind all life. We can't exist without God.

This separation is more like a married couple that live in the same house but have little interaction with each other. They share space and that's about it. No communication, no affection, and no joy.

God is never the one creating the separation. When a person feels that God has abandoned them, this cannot be true since you are still alive. Simply put, it is 'ungodly behavior' causing the separation. If ungodly behavior is not corrected, a person will eventually self-destruct.

"If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple you are." ~1 Corinthians 3:17

Again, God is not the one causing the destruction. God works by laws and when those laws are broken, a result occurs. So while it may sound like God is sitting behind a big desk, ready to hit the 'destruct' button when you misbehave, it's not like that at all. You're simply experiencing a scientific principle that Isaac Newton stated this way:

For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

However, the Bible revealed this scientific law thousands of years before Newt!

"Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap." ~Galations 6:7

The Bible is the only book on the planet that can help you 'clean up' your temple and experience a 'closeness' with your Creator. However, the Bible must be understood correctly in order for its principles and promises to work.

Remember, truth is the basis of worshipping God. This means any lies about God, Jesus or the Bible will keep you from experiencing life fully. When you embrace the truth, you embrace your Creator.
